"Pleasantly surprised by the quality" 2010-02-26
By Aleksandr Belyarchik (Los Angeles, CA)
I picked up this flash here on Amazon due to the price, not being able to afford the Canon 430EX II and 580. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality when I received it. Yes, there are some things - i.e. plastic shoe mount, and the plastic battery holder that are not up to the standards, but I didn't expect more from a $100 flash. It looks massive on my 7D, and adds a little to the weight, but I like how it performs in low light situations that I'm constantly faced with.

I shoot ballroom dancing competitions, and the lights are very bad, making it almost impossible to be able to stop the action. I'm using Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, and also will be getting a Canon 85mm f/1.8 to complement that.

As far as the features, they're all that you'd expect from a Canon flash. Opteka does have power! You'll be amazed at how it's able to light up the rooms, or bounce off the walls. Make sure that you get some good batteries to go along with it. I decided to go with Sanyo, due to some rave reviews.

To summarize, I think this is a decent piece of equipment, considering what you're paying for it. After playing with it for a day, it greatly improved all of my low light pictures, and now makes things much more easier when working with smaller apertures or fast shutter speeds.

 "Great flash" 2010-02-25
By B. Brown (Ohio)
Mine just came in the mail and ive been testing it out all day and it works perfectly with my Canon EOS rebel T1i. the built in diffuser works great and its perfect for bounce photography. like most other reviews yes the battery door does feel very loose...when its open. and i have yet to have any troubles with the batteries everything feels solid and secure and to me its fairly light. it is a great flash for the money, anybody looking to buy a new flash whether you are a beginner or a professional you should definitely invest in this flash, its easy on the wallet and like most opteka products I've used its good quality.

"Decent flash for the price" 2010-01-23
By L. Marcucio (CT)
The flash did a decent job. I can now take pictures indoors at night with great lighting. A few complaints:

- flash is heavy. with my canon digital rebel eos xti, it got heavy!! My forearms were really burning after a couple of takes but i'm sure I'd have that with any external flash

- recharge took a while. i had to wait maybe 30 whole seconds before I could take the next one. maybe my battery was low but i only used it for a few takes before i started noticing.

- noisy. while it's recharging, this high pitch noise would stay humming and it can be annoying.

you get what you pay for and i think it was a decent purchase for the price. i'm still going to keep it and maybe keep extra batteries handy.

 "Opteka EF-600 for Canon" 2009-12-30
By KaufmanD
I was surprised and impressed for $[...] and it does have some nice features. I do believe that there is a design flaw with the battery compartment and the stand did not come with the unit. My Canon XSi did recognize the flash unit and I was able to control some features from the camera's LCD. All-in-all, I was happy with my purchase. Although, periodically, the flash shuts down (for no apparent reason) and the camera doesn't see it. If I reseat the batteries in the EF-600 and boot the camera, then all is well. Recycle time is not as fast as the 430 EX (not II), but it does the job when it works properly (sort-of strange to say it that way).

If Opteka would re-design the battery compartment, this would be a great value for the price. Good for amateurs on a budget, but not for the prosumer. I would spend the extra $$$s and go for the 430EXII

"Don't know why anyone would bother with the +1, +2, or +4, but the set's cheap enough..." 2010-02-08
By Jay
Some time ago, I had a 52mm +10 closeup I'd purchased from a local Wolf Camera. Was a great little filter to experiment with. I sold the camera and lenses/filters I had when I upgraded to a D80 w/ Nikon 18-200 lens, and never did find a 72mm +10 filter until I saw this set on Amazon. But I was hesitant due to the price. I paid $30 for the one 52mm +10 filter, and here are 4 filters, including a +10, for less than $15 total? Recently sold the 18-200mm lens, and got a couple Sigma lenses (18-50 and 70-300), and finally caved and added the 58mm versions of these filters. I figured as cheap as they were, even if they were pure crap, it wouldn't be a big loss.

What I've found is the +10 in this set produces far less distortion at the edges than the one I got from Wolf. However, the image is very hazy. It's easily fixable with some contrast boost, so it's only a minor annoyance (and the reason I went with 4 instead of 5 stars).

The best way to use these filters is to put them on your longest lens for maximum effect, set your lens to manual focus @ infinity, and get close to whatever your taking a picture of. REAL close. With the 70-300 @ 300mm and the +10 filter I can get within ~2 inches of my subject. Auto-focus will not work, don't even try. Instead, keep the lens at infinity, and physically move your lens closer or farther from the subject to bring it into focus. The depth of field is practically non-existent at this magnification, so make your movements very slow, and very shallow. Your pictures will also greatly benefit from a lot of light, ideally you'll use a ring flash, or set a slave flash to fire when you snap your shot. On-board flash may cause more problems than it's worth, and will likely produce a shadow from your lens. A hot-show flash will help some, but you really want the light pointing at your subject, and that's just too difficult when it's sitting back next to your face.

 "Great Value" 2009-08-13
By Amber Estrella (issaquah, wa)
These are a great buy. You can't beat the price for added flexibility. They attach easily and do their job (magnifying the image) really well.

Couple of things to mention- one is that of course, once these are attached to the lens one has to use manual focus. That could be a problem for folks trying to shoot things that move quickly. Additionally, the DOF narrows significantly with the stronger magnifications. This could be a problem if you're shooting insects. Neither of these issues have to do with this manufacturer nor the vendor, but rather limitations of the product itself.

For me though, these diopters work extremely well for my purposes (artistic, abstract photography and flower macros.) I find the functionality to be excellent. My only complaint, and considering what I got for the price, it's a small complaint, is about the packaging. Personally, I would prefer a case with non-scratch surfaces, but the folding, wallet design is a good one. All in all, an excellent product and a great value for the money.

 "Great when Used Correctly." 2009-08-04
By Vichiousfishes
I see that in the negative ratings here the people simply misunderstood what these are for. They are to move your camera in CLOSER to the subject and simulate a macro lens. What they do is essentially act as a magnifying glass. And like one, you need to move it in and out till you find the appropriate distance for it to work properly. This is not a tele-converter.

I find they work quite well. I have had macro lenses in which the subject takes up the sensor, a 1:1 ratio. These however allow for the subject to assault the sensor. Instead of life size these make for race of super giant monster sized. Ultra macro can be achieved with the small expenditure of fifteen bucks.

I find there is no outstanding vignetting or aberrations. At the highest magnifications there is an extremely shallow depth of field, so be sure you are prepared to work with that if you plan on working in those types of magnification.

Overall a great product, and with macro lenses starting at $500, I encourage you to sacrifice just a little of that macro lens fund to just give these a try and see if you can't go spend that extra money saved up on a hot date, camera geek.

"Good in Theory - Can't Focus Through These AT ALL." 2009-07-05

I purchased these to try and extend the focus on my zoom lens ... all I extended in reality was a headache. The 2x was not completely impossible to work with, but anything higher ... very out of focus and blurry. Save your money for a nicer lens instead.

Good controller. I had a gift certificate or I probably would have gone with the cheaper knock-off version. The canon one is nice, but pricey if you have to pay full price. Adorama seems to have a pretty good deal on it though.

This remote works exactly as described. It only gets 4 stars from me because I feel the price is way too high for such a simple device.

But, if you want to do time-lapse photography and not have your camera connected to a laptop, this is the only way to go.

 "Just works" 2009-12-17
By jonnymano (detroit, mi)
I'm probably not saying anything new here... but it works as advertised, and would have gotten 5 stars if it weren't so overpriced. And good luck if you want to buy the even more overpriced cable extension. Once you figure out how to use it, (the rotating wheel is also a clickable button), it's easy enough to work. And for the fools that are complaining about how you can't turn it off... you don't need to, it's like a digital watch, it stays on for like 3 years. Oh, and you can do infinite captures, you just have to set the count to "00"... not sure why they don't advertise that or explain it in the manual.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLRs

Review Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLRs

Buy Cheap Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLRs From Here Now!

With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM is a remarkable lens with outstanding image quality that will take your photography into new dimensions and areas of dramatic expression. The super-wide zoom not only gives you the freedom to get exactly what you want in the shot, it dramatically alters perspective to allow for dynamic expression. The lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. Creative photographers can use this phenomenon to create excellent separation between subject and background for a strong sense of presence, or for a pan-focus effect with everything from foreground to background sharply in focus. Exceptionally light and compact for its focal length range, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM also has an incredibly close minimum focusing distance of just 24cm. A ring-type USM works in concert with the camera to provide super-fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking - with full manual override available at any time. Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare. A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and getting your subject or model to stand out from the background.

 "Great lens" 2010-02-23
By Brian C. Davison (Virginia)
I purchased this lens as a consumer user for landscape and family photos with my Canon D40. While I don't use it as an everyday lens, it works great in confined spaces (family pictures indoors) or when trying to get great scenic shots. There is little to no distortion around the edges and it's focus is very quick and accurate. The lens came in very handy when I captured some shots of the DC blizzard in and around our neighborhood. I could capture wide-angle shots giving a much better perspective of the snowbanks in the streets (e.g. capture both street views at an intersection). And it's great for capturing both close subjects and a broad background within the same shot. I haven't used other wide-angle lenses but this has worked great for me.

bought this beast yesterday. here's the deal--so good. read the reviews. i pondered to tokina, sigma--whatever. sounded good. but i wanted canon quality. new t1i refurb which needed good glass i guess, cause this action delivered. specs all sounded good. have the kit 18-55mm (which is surprisingly good and image stabilization kicks...) and 50mm f/1.8 cheapo. so specs and my need for wide angle prompted me to dive into a used lens. 24 hours later. had my camera for 5 of those. reviews, specs, stats, sweet spots, yeah yeah yeah. don't worry about any of it. this lens kicks a$. color. sharpness. bokeh (oh my). view (WIDE!! yeah!). so good. so good.

 "Best in This Class" 2010-02-10
By Marcio Jose Bastos Silva (Vermont, USA)
I was in doubt about what ultra wide angle lens I should get for my Canon 40D. Firstly, I thought about Sigma 10-20mm but after reading the reviews that say that there is a great possibility of getting a bad copy from Sigma I gave up. Then I thought about Tokina 11-16mm but I did not like all that fringe coming along with it and price was about the same of the Canon 10-22mm. Finally, I decided for the Canon 10-22mm after reading the reviews in pro of it. I can tell you after some shots with Canon 10-22mm that I agree that this lens is the best in its class. I bit expensive one must confess but we pay for what what we get and quality does not come cheap. This lens is Tac Sharp and the construction is wonderful. I think it is not considered a red ring by Canon because it is not sealed. It has internal focus and the ring focus and zoom are smooth all the way. It is also pretty wide for an E-FS lens. The only not so good characteristics of this lens that I could point out is that the maximum aperture is F/3.5 but that is not a big issue if you do outdoors. There is a photo of mine uploaded to Amazon taken with my Canon E-FS 10-22mm on my Canon 40D. It is New York seen from above. Check it out and make sure the lens is good. An image says more than 1000 worlds, right? I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS AWESOME LENS...

 "Excellent Wide-Angle Lens" 2010-01-20
By Photography Lover (Kansas)
I purchased this lens over a year ago from Amazon and have given it a good workout before typing this review. Overall, this is an excellent lens. The build quality is very solid and the glass is near Canon's legendary L quality. I have used this lens extensively for landscapes and close-up action shots, which really make you feel like you are in the scene. When purchasing this lens, keep in mind that using a wide-angle lens properly is different than other lenses. You must keep architectural lines straight or they will appear distorted, and you must "approach" your subject carefully to truly capture an immersive view. But once you learn the tricks of the trade, you will find many uses for this fun and versatile lens. Two thumbs up!

By S. Sedona
I have been very happy with this lens. I like to take a lot of landscape type pictures, and I really wanted a lens with a wider angle. I took this lens to the beach and the angle was so wide that I could get the last of the sunset and the moon in the same picture (the moon was almost directly overhead). I would just say if you get this lens to make sure you also have a lens that zooms since the nature of this lens is to not zoom in very much.

"Great value, works as expected" 2010-02-12
By William Hobbs (Atlanta, GA USA)
Feels well made, quality of the machining looks good. It locks firmly to my Nikon lens (100mm F2.8 E AIS), and attaches well to the Canon body (20D). There is a small amount of rotational play in the connection to the body, but I only notice it when I am looking for it.

As I expected from reading reviews in different places, it is a little thinner than it should be, so it allows the lens to focus a little bit past infinity, but I do not consider it a serious problem.

I was interested in purchasing some older manual focus lenses (specifically the 100mm) because they were significantly cheaper than a modern AF lens with optics of similar quality. For this purpose, the adapter is great. I have read that you can get similar adapters on Ebay for a little less money, but I would much rather stick with the reputation of Amazon and Fotodiox for a few bucks.

If you are in need of an adapter because you cannot get the lens you want in an EOS mount, but you would be spending $500+ on a lens, you might consider a higher quality adapter. For example, my brother has a 5D and several L lenses, and recently bought an anamorphic lens for work in film school. It came with the Fotodiox F to EOS adapter on it, but he will be upgrading to a higher quality adapter, as saving $50-100 on an adapter is not worth even a small sacrifice in quality for what he does.

 "Bad, bad, bad!" 2010-02-03
By Trim Damage (Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada)
I just bought one from Ebay. It costs me only $12. I believe it was made in China. I was so excited to receive it, and eager to try it on my Canon 40D camera with my Nikon AF-S 300mm ED IF lens. It worked poorly --- the image turned out blurred. I was a bit disappointed. I blamed on the poor design. But when I tried to remove the lens from the camera, the adapter and the lens got stuck firmly together. I looked at the adapter and the lens, praying that I could separate the two pieces by hand with all my might, I failed. I started to panic. I said to myself "what a waste (swearing a bit inevitably) --- a cheap $12 third party adapter permanently attaches to a $1000+ beautiful Nikon lens!!!". Next, I used a small screw driver to press on a little black hook that came with the adapter. Fortunately, I managed to separate the adapter from the lens. This lesson teaches me never use a third party product on any camera again. I literally wrote that on the box containing the adapter, fearing that another victim may be trapped. Night mare...I am still sweating...

 "OK for 1 day" 2010-01-30
By George Griffin (NYC)
It did seem too good to be true. Novoflex wants $270 for its adapter. Fotodiox has a "Pro" version ($90) which I've just ordered, thanks to Amazon's returns policy. The problem is the loose fit: tight on the Canon body but loose on all my Nikon lenses. It doesn't bother other users but it's just not acceptable for precision work on a fixed mount or hand-held.

 "Perfect camera lens adapter" 2009-12-08

The adapter fit exactly right and allowed the use of all my Nikon F-2A lenses on the Canon Digital. Saved me a fortune in new lenses at an unbelievably cheap price.

Be careful, it may tend to get stuck if you try it on older Nikon lenses.

 "GARBAGE!" 2010-02-19
By Itsmeagain! (Nobamaburg)
I have had this for 3 days, purchased from cowboystudio through Amazon. The first 2 days it worked great; I even gave it a '4' star review on Amazon! Now when I partially press the button on the transmitter the green lights come on and the camera meters, focuses and beeps, as it should. But when I press the button all the way to take a photo the transmitter light turns red, but the receiver light stays green and the camera shutter does not operate! So, I changed my earlier 4 star review to this updated 1 star review, and I add the words: THIS IS JUST A PIECE OF CHEAP CHINESE GARBAGE!

(Over the last several months I have been disappointed by the poor quality of a number of photo/electronics items I purchased from vendors using Amazon. ~IT DIDN'T USED TO BE THAT WAY!~ It's as if Amazon has become a dumping ground for cheaply made electronics and gizmos--like another 'Ebay'. It looks to me like hucksters have found a way to unload their low quality goods on consumers through the Amazon middleman, then take the money and run. Have you noticed how the names of vendors keeps changing on Amazon? I must pay more attention to the adage: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I will consider the Vivitar RF remote, as another reviewer has done. It is more expensive, and has only received a couple reviews on Amazon so far (both 5 stars). If it gets several more good reviews, and I find good words about it on the net, I just might buy it directly from a REPUTABLE DEALER, LIKE 47ST PHOTO OR B&HPHOTO.)

"If only it had worked" 2010-02-17
By S. Viens (USA)
Spent quite a bit of time trying to get it to work with the 40D, but it never fired the shutter. Exposure settings were fine, got the green lights, then the red lights, then nothing... tried it every which way, even in delay mode, would keep on blinking, could hear camera beeping, but it would not fire. I could manually press the shutter and the resulting picture would be fine. Enough time spent, it's going back.

FYI - What happened next... I purchased the Vivitar wireless remote for the Canon 40D/50D and it worked like a charm! Wireless Remote Shutter Release For Canon EOS 40D and 50D SLR Digital Cameras

 "A dud?" 2010-01-31
By Adam Sacasa
I'm familiar with radio triggers for my strobes but I've never used a wireless camera trigger. The unit didn't work (cord plugged in, fresh batteries and all that) at first but I changed the channel and got it to fire a about 10 times with maybe 30ft range. After that, I've tried several channels and it still doesn't work so I'll send it back.

With both units on the same channel, the receiver doesn't blink so I don't think it's a connection issue. I didn't want to give this a one star rating since if get a working one, I might love it.

As for the unit itself, changing the channels is difficult. You'll need a pen or something similar to change them since the channels are about level with the plate. Even with a pen, they're still hard to change sometimes. It's a very poor design choice.

Also, if you shoot with thumb focus, you'll need to switch the camera to the regular focus mode to get the camera to focus wirelessly.

Other than that, the unit does work as a wired trigger even without batteries. Hopefully I can update this with a positive review if I get a working one.

P.S.- I use a Canon 20D.

 "Great remote, Excellent value" 2010-01-21
By K. A. Cadena (Washington, DC)
This works exactly as described and for the price, is an outstanding value.

It comes with the batteries that both the remote and trigger require and I had it ready to go and was shooting photos within two minutes of opening the box: [...]

Highly recommend!

"I should have bought this sooner..." 2010-01-18
By C. Freyer (San Francisco, CA, USA)
This is an awesome addition for the camera. It's up and running in like 30 seconds, and the possibilities are endless because you're not using a cable to release your shutter. It's been used a ton and now is always in the camera bag when we head out. Kids love doing self portraits with it. All around family fun.
